About Comet Hale-Bopp
|
|
It was discovered by Alan Hale and Thomas Bopp on 1995 July 23 as diffuse object with
condensation. At the time of discovery, the comet was at mag. ~10.5, although still outside
the Jupiter orbit, 6.7 a.u. from the Sun. This suggested an absolute magnitude of -1.6 which
is about 1000 times brighter than comet Halley. Around the time of perihelion passage
(1997 April 1), comet Hale-Bopp was bright naked-eye object, shining around magnitude -1.
Conspicious dust and gas tails (both about 20 degrees long) were seen with naked-eye from
dark sky locations.
