lens and Canon EOS 20D DSLR camera. Capella is in image center, orange-colored planet Mars is to the left.
Open clusters Hyades and Pleiades are filling the bottom left part of image. Comet Holmes is just beside Algol in Perseus.
California nebula (NGC 1499) is above and left of comet Holmes.
Image is a composition of 12 x 5 minute co-added exposures with dark subtracted.

False color animation of 17P/Holmes outburst development, obtained on 8 nights (Nov. 4, 7, 10, 16; Dec. 6, 13, 19 and Jan. 8, 2008). The comet initially at around magnitude 2.2 slowly moved accross the constellation Perseus and faded. Comet coma expanded and became more and more diffuse. Using RGRADIENT procedure from IRIS software, we processed a series of BVRW images, obtained on 2007 Nov. 1 (20h38-20h48UT) with 0.60-m, f/3.3 Deltagraph telescope and CCD. The rotational gradient was used to enhance poorly visible details in bright coma, like jets emanating from bright comet nucleus and a bow shock boundary, where supersonic solar wind particles interact with ionized cometary atmosphere.
