Images of comet C/1996 B2 Hyakutake taken during the period April 1 - 13, 1996
Note, that the colors on CCD images are false and were used in order to enhance the comet tail structure.
April 7 and 9, 1996
Series of CCD images were obtained in the light of singly-ionized water moleculas on 1996 Apr. 7 and 9 in mediocre conditions (some clouds occasionally). All H2O+ frames were taken with the 2.8/180mm lens. Images taken on Apr. 9, shows high plasma ejection activity. At least six conspicious streamers are visible extending up to ~6 deg from the head region. Mosaic images shows several knots of material along the main tail stream. Additional monitoring with the wide-field 35mm f.l. lens, V filter and ST-6 CCD shows about 22 deg of ion tail. Straight, narrow gas tail of rather uniform surface brightness is present from the nucleus distance ~10 to 22 deg.

Wide-field mosaic image of comet Hyakutake, taken on 1996 Apr. 9, with the 2.8/180mm lens, CCD and narrow-band H2O+ filter, centered at 620nm (FWHM=10nm). Four consecutive frames were taken between 19:30 and 20:20UT. Each frame was exposed for 10 minutes. The frame field of view is 11.3x2.1 deg.
(Size 424K)
B-W negative of the previous image. The frame field of view is 10.9x2.1 deg.
(Size 310K)
Wide-field mosaic image of comet Hyakutake gas tail, obtained with the 2.8/35mm lens, ST-6 CCD and V-filter. Three consecutive frames were taken between 19:36 and 20:15UT. Each frame was exposed for 5 minutes. Histogramic equalization was used in order to bring out the ion tail extension. The frame field of view is 24x8 deg.
(Size 123K)
B-W negative of the comet initial 4 deg with details in inner gas tail. A fresh cloud of plasma has been ejected just few hours before this image was taken. These details are hidden in the mosaic images above. Frame obtained with the 2.8/180mm lens, CCD and narrow-band H2O+ filter, centered at 620nm (FWHM=10nm).

April 7, 1996
Wide-field mosaic image of comet Hyakutake, taken on 1996 Apr. 7, with the 2.8/180mm lens, CCD and narrow-band H2O+ filter, centered at 620nm (FWHM=10nm). Three consecutive frames were taken between 19:34 and 20:18UT. Each frame was exposed for 5 minutes. The frame field of view is 8.3x2.0 deg.
(Size 282K)
B-W negative of the previous image with the same field size.
(Size 194K)
Wide-field image of comet Hyakutake tail system, obtained with the 2.8/35mm lens, ST-6 CCD and V-filter. Exposure time was 5 minutes, starting at 19:46:15UT. The frame field size is about 14x10 deg.
(Size 77K)
April 6, 1996
Series of narrow-band CCD images were taken on 1996 Apr. 6, from the Crni Vrh Observatory in very good atmospheric conditions. The 90mm f.l. frames, obtained in the light of singly-ionized water moleculas shows numerous streamers, extending up to ~5deg from the nuclear region. Mosaic images shows several knots of material along the main tail stream. The ion tail total length on 65mm f.l. images, is about 15 degrees. A remarkable kink is present at nucleus distance 6.0deg. At this point, the tail PA is turning from 44deg to 50deg. Additional monitoring with red continuum filter shows ~8 deg broad dust tail.
