Images of comet C/1996 B2 Hyakutake taken during the February 1996
Note, that the colors on CCD images are false and were used in order to enhance the comet tail structure.
SEE THE FIRST SPECTRUM OF COMET 1996 B2 (HYAKUTAKE)
It was obtained at the European Southern Observatory in Chile on Feb 8.2 UT with the ESO 1.5m telescope using Boller&Chivens spectrograph + CCD. Authors: T. Zwitter, H. Mikuz (Univ. of Ljubljana), U. Munari, M. Rejkuba (Observatory Padova).

Trace of ~0.8o weavy ion tail structure, extending in ~PA 290o is present on this image. It was processed from the 300s R- filter exposure, taken on 1996 Feb. 28, with the 20-cm, f/2 Baker-Schmidt camera and ST-6 CCD. Exposure started at 3:33:35UT.

V-filter 300s exposure of comet, taken on 1996 Feb. 27 with the 20-cm, f/2 Baker-Schmidt camera and ST-6 CCD. Exposure started at 3:47:36UT. There is large ellipsoidal coma ~20'x25' and ~1deg faint tail in PA ~290o.
(Size 22K)
The 180s R-filter image was obtained at 3:54:47UT with the same instrumentation. It shows similar ~1o fan-like tail in PA ~270-290o. Very similar tail appearance on V and R exposures indicate it is most probable composed of dust particles, reflecting the sunlight.

This image of comet was taken on 1996 Feb. 18 with the 20-cm, f/2 Baker-Schmidt camera, V filter and ST-6 CCD. Exposure time was 300s, starting at 3:37:24UT. The V-band image shows ellipsoidal coma ~14'x16' and ~0.3deg faint tail in PA ~280deg.
(Size 23K)
R-filter image, taken with the same instrumentation. Exposure time was 180s, starting at 4:18:23UT.
